One of the premier on-site courses offered by Laser Safety Consulting is the two to three day Laser Safety Officer Training program. This custom-tailored program provides in-depth instruction on every aspect of laser safety, from standard operating procedures to safety audits to evaluation of laser safety hazards and the proper protective gear. When a company's Laser Safety Officer (LSO) has completed this course, he or she will be competent in all LSO responsibilities as mandated by the ANSI Z136.1 standard. Proper Laser Safety Officer Training is of the utmost importance, because it is the LSO's duty to ensure the safety of the job site as well as all the employees therein. High-powered lasers carry several risks, including eye and skin damage, as well as presenting a possible fire hazard. A company's LSO must be able to properly identify and manage all laser hazards. This includes, among other things, establishing a Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) in which safety precautions are observed. Laser Safety Consulting trains LSOs in NHZ evaluation so that no area of the workplace carries an unmarked risk. In other words, if a Laser Safety Officer establishes a Nominal Hazard Zone based around the area in which a laser could cause damage to people or property, then appropriately worded signs must be placed accordingly. If an LSO doesn't know the correct way in which to evaluate a Nominal Hazard Zone, then everyone is at risk and the company may be left liable. To safeguard the well-being of all persons and property on a job site, a Laser Safety Officer must be thoroughly trained.
